Tammy has a new album that has just been released, and I decided to invite her on this show to promote this beautiful body of work. Now you may be wondering, why would I promote a musician and her album on a podcast that is all about tapping into inner wisdom? I've shared before my belief that there are no such things as coincidences, and when so called coincidences happen. It is your job to get curious and explore why Tammy was introduced to me by a face the book friend when I posted that I had moved to Portugal. This friend tags Tammy, a sister Canadian who was also living in Portugal, and suggested we connect both Tammy and I responded with a Yeah, let's do it. When I visited Lisbon in February where Tammy is living, she suggested we meet for a cocktail at a rooftop bar, my kind of gal I thought, and the moment I met her, there was this buzz of energy, and I immediately liked her. Then she told me about her new album. And I understood there was some greater force at work here and that we were meant to come together. The title of Tami's new album is soul whisper. Coincidentally, or not the title of my new book that will be released in September 2023 is whispers of the soul. When Tammy told me the name of her album, I practically fell off my chair, my jaw dropped, and I was like, Wow, that's so crazy. And then I heard the compelling story about how she followed those whispers, and all the spiritual bread crumbs laid out by the universe that have led her to fulfill a beautiful, creative

let's talk about that a little bit. And before we get into the whole how you listen to the whispers of your soul, tell us about the outer album and the inspiration for it. Well, the

Tammy Weis: 00:04:19

album is I wrote music to the poems of Fernando so and so is a very famous poet here, as I'm sure is, as you're well aware of now, now that I've met you, and I happen to come across him when I was in an art gallery and and I started reading his poems and his work. And it was the hairs on my arm stood up, it was like I was seeing life in a different way. I thought about things in a different way, and I've never been quite He's inspired by words like that before. And so for me, I found his work very intriguing. And, and it started this journey of, you know, needing to understand him and his work and and set that to music. And hopefully to inspire people the way I had been inspired by his work.

So you said that the hairs on your arm raised up when you when you came across his work and read his his poetry? Was that assigned to you in any way that you needed to explore his material?

Tammy Weis: 00:05:37

More? Yeah, most definitely. I think it was one of those, you know, you, we get those light bulb moments, you know, where you go, Whoa, you know, I had never, it was like, it was this whole new universe that opened up of this grander scope of being able to look at things differently. And his mind was just incredible. And so, you know, in going through that journey, and understanding his work and understanding him, and he was had many metronomes. So he wrote from different perspectives. It's fascinating, it's really, really fascinating. And then, of course, the journey led me to connect to him in ways that I never thought possible. Almost feeling like this was part of my, my journey in my life was to, to be inspired and to inspire others, hopefully, with his works. And

yeah, I love that. And what we'll get into that in a bit with, with going down this, this path, tell us a little bit about what you're doing that is that is unique with it with this the music so that it's his poetry, if I understand it's a poetry, that and you are creating music, that about his poetry, so you're, you're weaving the poetry together into your, into your songwriting into your,

your music, so what I did is I would choose the poems, and it was very interesting, because I would, I would look at these poems, and then I would instantly hear music. So then then I would have a melody in my head as to how I wanted to do it. And then I would sing the words. So literally, it's creating the music, but it's also singing the words. And so creating melodies to the words. I did that and then, you know, better fantastic man here, Louisville, also, who's does very well in this country, and he agreed to produce. So then we just added this, you know, extra layer and element to, to bring it to light in the best way that we could.

So walk us through some of those spiritual breadcrumbs that you that you followed that, that opened up more doors for you that created or allowed all these things to come together. And I know there was like a series of really interesting coincidences that happened, that in my interpretation of it is validation recognition, saying you're on the right path. Let's keep going. And here's another piece that is going to support your journey. So can you just share a little more about that with with us?

Tammy Weis: 00:08:26

Well, the first experience was one of my first trips to Lisbon actually, I was staying in an apartment in Alfama. And it was through a friend and the Wi Fi wasn't working. So I thought, Okay, well, I'll have a little nap, and I'll go to sleep. And I woke up. Maybe about an hour or so later, the Wi Fi still wasn't working. And at that point, I thought, Okay, well, I'll just sleep again. But there was this voice, or whatever we want to call it. That said, You're in Lisbon. Go walk around. So I literally, I think I still had bedhead. I brush my teeth. And I walked down the cobblestone streets of El fama. And I came across this art gallery with a poster outside that said, we do paintings with red wine and coffee. And I thought, That's my kind of place. And there was a resident painter painting and in the gallery, and there was a fella behind the counter. And so we started talking and I saw that he had a guitar and I said, Oh, are you a guitarist? Yes, I'm a jazz singer. So literally, he had picked up the guitar and started playing all these jazz standards. And I started singing so this was literally 20 minutes after I woke up. Then literally people started gathering around. And we were having this impromptu concert, if you will. And all of a sudden the the painter after we had finished, you know, three or four songs had said he was he's Mongolian Russian. So he said to the guitar player and Russian, tell her she should do songs of Fernando Pessoa. And that's when your career will take off. And I said, this Fernando Pessoa and he said Look around you and in the gallery was filled with paintings of Fernando Pessoa. So it started this journey.

Anita Adams: 00:10:26

So that was that was the beginning. That was you. You weren't even aware of this poet Fernando Pessoa before this? Okay, would you stay? And he said to the guitarist, that you need to focus on the poetry of Fernanda and that was that was the spark that was the spark. That was the spark. And what did you What did you think when he said that, were you like, oh, okay, interesting, or did you kind of brush it off? Where were you curious? Like, what what was the, your process with that?

Tammy Weis: 00:11:01

I felt, I mean, it's sort of like, I'm quite empathic, you know, and I really am aware of energies. And I did feel a strong energy from him that there was a definitely a spiritual element to him. And, and the way that he sort of expressed it was it really resonated with me. So I went, Okay. I believe in science, or I believe in, you know, things things happen for a reason. That's just, that's who I am. So I really felt a strong vibe, if you will, to follow through. And it was a life changing moment. Absolutely. Because I find it really interesting, because I think also, you know, I've done that particular song was called sleep while I watch and, and I wonder, I say, you know, when I do it live, I say, how many moments and times in our lives? Do we actually go back to sleep? What would have happened? Had I gone back to sleep? You know, it was in that moment, I made a decision to go and be present and connect and my life changed. And from there, it evolved into, you know, things like couldn't even possibly imagine. So

what happened next? What was the next thing that was presented to you that got you want to continue down this path?

Tammy Weis: 00:12:32

Oh, well, another one was, my boyfriend at the time had said, because I'm very connected. I have a British passport as well. So living in London, so I'm very connected with the Canadian Embassy in London as well. And so he had suggested, you know, having sharing that connection and having that in in Lisbon with the Canadian Embassy. A few days later, we were walking in a random street in Lisbon in Lapa neighborhood. And I'd heard a group of people talking and out and about, so we know they're Canadian. I thought I should go and say hello, which I quite often do. I you know, it's just what I do. Oh, so I started talking. Are you guys from Canada? Yes, we are a great. What about you? Yes. What do you do? I'm a jazz singer. Are you living here? Yes. And the one fella said, Oh, that's wonderful. We definitely must keep in touch. And I said, Okay. And he said, Oh, let me introduce myself. My name is Jeffrey Mater. I'm the Canadian ambassador to Portugal. Whoa, well. It didn't look more that. I mean, it's just, you know, extraordinary. So.

Anita Adams: 00:13:52

And how has that opened up doors for you and opportunities by that through that connection?

Tammy Weis: 00:13:59

Well, absolutely. The Canada Council for the Arts actually sponsored the album. So yeah, you know, it's it's having that connection. Because it's more of a bridging the gap between Canada and Portugal, there's over half a million Portuguese that live in Canada. So there's a very strong tie in a very strong connection. So what's great about this project, and this album is it's, you know, it's a cultural, it's bridging the gap between the two countries and, and there are a lot of similarities as well. So you know, that that's very interesting part of it as well. I mean, yeah.

Anita Adams: 00:14:41

It's fascinating. And again, when things like that happen, I believe it gives you the confidence to keep moving forward like that is more than just a coincidence. It's, it's quite remarkable that the very people that you would be drawn to in a foreign country are individuals that can help move your movie forward with your vision? Which is, which is divinely guided in my opinion? So,

I mean, just there's so many as you know, I'm, yeah. Literally, I

think you could write a book about all the different connecting points that have brought you to where you are today and the release of this, this album. I'm so I'm curious about the courage it takes to lean in and listen to can you talk about about that? Have you have you? Have you felt? Has it been easy for you to move forward? Or do you feel like there's some times that you're taking a risk and you're, you're leaning in and and you have to try to find the courage to take that next step?

Tammy Weis: 00:15:48

It has been the most challenging, yeah, situation in my life. And there has been a lot it's been extremely difficult. I mean, I'm, I'm a girl from, you know, Edmonton, Alberta. Well, I actually grew up in Sherwood Park, Alberta, the world's largest family. And I suddenly arrived in Lisbon, and I don't know the language, I don't really know anyone. And I tremendous leap of faith. And sometimes the choices aren't great. And there's there could be a lot of suffering. And sometimes the choices are amazing. So it, it has been very challenging, I have to say, but also, in the end, like we say, with the the God whispers or whatever the coincidences, whatever we want to call it. That is what gets me through, you know, that is sort of the reassurance that I need that you are on the right track, what you're doing is important. And it affects a lot of people, you've had tremendous support along the way. Sadly, a huge lot of those people have since passed away. But I feel that their energy and presence is still with me and helping you. But it's it's not it. Yeah, sometimes a question. Yeah. Because I'm here and I still, you know, when you when you don't know, the language, and there's a huge difference in terms of culture, and the adaptation, you know, as you're, as you're aware, there's, you have to take tremendous leaps of faith. And sometimes those decisions aren't great ones. And that's all part of the process, you know, what do I see at the end, I feel like, it needs to be done for for me and my healing and my groin, but also everybody that has been with me and supported me along the way. And of course, Fernando Pessoa, you know, I believe so strongly in his work. And I love as many people as possible, I mean, obviously, his, you know, he is growing tremendously as as, as a poet and his word, he has tremendous support, you know, around the globe, but to actually put those words, you know, to music and have my interpretation as a Canadian as a, as a foreigner coming in, you know, in a very unique situation. Yeah. You know, for me, that's, it's, that's a huge life goal for

me, yes. Beautiful, and to see,

inspire some people along the way. Yeah.

Anita Adams: 00:18:33

Inspire them in multiple ways, with the beautiful words of the music and the poetry that you bring to life. And with your story of of courage and conviction and stepping out of your comfort zone. Do you it's natural, like it's so natural, when weird are going for big, have a big vision, trying to fulfill a big vision to have moments of fear and doubt and all that I just think that's just part of the journey. Do you have any things that you do practices that you do that help you move through those moments of doubt and help you to take that next step to look for that next spiritual breadcrumb and pick up that next spiritual poke? I love that

Tammy Weis: 00:19:23

spiritual breadcrumb. Yeah, no, I mean, I meditate every day I have to. I yeah, I meditate every day that you know, that's a huge thing. I'm in nature a lot. Um, you know, at the gym and surrounding yourself with supportive people, you know, it's, it's so important and and let as I say, particularly with this project, because, you know, key people that were with me are no longer here. So, it is also good Keeping up that momentum, you know, to, this isn't just about me anymore, you know, this is about those that have supported me along the way. Family of fanatics, so which, which, you know, his nephew, which was I was very, very close to which Miguel Rosa dish. And these are things that, you know, I'm doing in their honor as well, you know. So that gives me a lot of strength, but also to, you know, my family, I come from six generations of musicians. And I think, you know, my mom was a singer, I'm like, my grandpa, other great grandparents, instrument played instruments and, and sang. And, you know, they always wanted to do this, but didn't have the opportunity. So that gives me a tremendous amount of strength to say, I'm in a position where I can sort of build that for my family as well, and their dreams and, and that's what I keep reminding myself about every day and beautiful help keep going, you know, because it's not just about me, and, and I'm supported, I feel them with me, I know that they're there, you know, helping me and, you know, these are things that you need to do,

Anita Adams: 00:21:14

right. Absolutely. And there's a gratitude for the groundwork that was laid by those that came before us. Right. And it sounds like there was some of that in your family for sure. So that's wonderful that you've, you've had that. Have you always been somebody that has listened to that soul voice and, and follow those, the nudges of the soul that have caught a lead you out the door in the middle of the night to, you know, find yourself in a in the right place at the right time? Or is that something you've learned to do?

Tammy Weis: 00:21:49

I think it's I, I've always had that element, I think my friends will probably agree. And if you ask them to say, you know, I would always go, I have a vibe, let's go here, or I have a vibe, let's do this. It was always just this. I don't know, this sort of gut feeling or, I don't know. And as when you keep sort of doing that, and you develop that, and then wonderful things happen, then you sort of, you know, develop it more hone it more. Yeah. Over the years. Yeah. And I think, with the meditation as well to it allows you to sort of be open to receive more things. So perhaps, maybe not get so bogged down with the day to day, and that actually allows you to, you know, go and do things out, you know, one of the stories that just that's coming up right now is, was we're talking so before I met the ambassador before, so it would have been the second one actually, I randomly went into a nail salon in Lisbon. And it was a small little nail salon. I don't even know why I went in, but I just thought I should go in and see, you know, the prices of things and, and I went in and I started speaking to the owner, and she spoke a little bit of English and I said I was doing this project of Fernando Pessoa. And she stood up to her clients and said in Portuguese, oh, everyone, this woman Tammy is doing this project of bananas. So how fantastic and they were some of them were clapping, which is really interesting. And literally, there was a woman at the door, honest to heavens, literally hand on the door, about to open the door to leave to leave. She looked up and she said Fernando Pessoa. And she said to the woman in Portuguese, she said, I work for his nephew. Wow, what? And I said so it's these kinds of things were like that, like I get these watch. And again, Luis Miguel, Rosa dish. I mean, it's so part of this journey. You know, again, he passed away a few years ago, but so part of this journey and without him I probably, you know, he opened so many doors for me. But

Anita Adams: 00:24:14

was he the nephew of this woman that Okay, and so she connected you with

Tammy Weis: 00:24:20

him? She connected but I, I was I had to go back to the nail salon a few more times. Because I said Is he ready to receive me yet? No, it's not ready. Come back next month. I was like, Okay. Is he ready to receive me? Yes. He's ready to receive you. So literally, I had his number and the next day I was at his house for lunch.

He was like a father figure to me and and he loved the fact that I was doing this was a huge support and invited me to many things where that led to so many other incredible connections and it's Just that those those urges you get or those vibes or those feelings. Actually, I'm gonna go in here, I'm gonna go into this listening to the nail salon,

Anita Adams: 00:25:11

I need to present something that you said. And I think it's really important that this is this is captured that you had to go back again and again, because you didn't get the contact information right away. But you understood that this there was a connection, you were curious, you needed to follow through and you went back a few times and kept asking, Is he ready? Can I get the contact information you did not give up. And I think that is really, really important. So the universe, God's Spirit, whatever that your word is for it is going to, yes, give you those spiritual breadcrumbs, those, those little nudges to follow, and it is your job, it's your job to keep pursuing them, especially when you've got that that deep sense of the rightness, this is the right path for me to be on.

Tammy Weis: 00:26:01

Yeah, no, I think you know, it's really important because this whole process is very sacred, like Fernando someone's very sacred. And, you know, I've always honored everything, you know, been in contact with the family with Casa Fernando. So to ensure that I'm honoring his legacy, so I knew it was very important that yeah, there was there was a reason for this. And also to, there was a time. So yeah, it was a tough place that I had to honor. You know, I wasn't going to push it. And so like, so you

Anita Adams: 00:26:37

weren't, you weren't going to push it, but you also weren't going to give up either. And I think that's really important, because I think a lot of people think that, if it's meant to be, then it's going to all fall into place super easily. And that's where I think a lot of people make mistakes, and they give up, they give up because it didn't all fall into place super easily.

Tammy Weis: 00:26:57

Well, that's what really is interesting, because, you know, living here, it's almost like you have to unlearn everything we've learned in Canada, it's like, because the rules are completely different. So if you're too aggressive here, or if you're too persistent, you're not going to get anywhere. Yes, you have to, to stay the long haul. But you also have to have a lot of patience, because things take a lot longer, because you have to persevere. And even when we might go, Okay, I've tried to call this person too many times, like, in Canada, this would would not be a good thing, you know, to continue. Here, you have to, and it's just the way that it's done in Portugal. Yeah, take longer. So you have to understand that, you know, and an honor that process, I think that's the difficulty I see a lot of people, a lot of North Americans or even British, and I can say that being British as well, is that you can't expect things to happen quickly, you have to adapt and honor the country, this country and their ways. And, and through that process. I mean, this album could have been done a long time ago. But a lot of things happened. And I have to accept the fact that happened for a reason. And so now is the time where everything that is supposed to happen to make it the best that it can be will happen because now is the time. The other two attempts that I had for launching, that was not the time. So now is the time, I you know, now is the time to launch. So you have to sort of honor and accept that and, and not get too discouraged and, and know that you're being guided and taken care of. I think that's the biggest thing that you can't think about too much. I mean, I'm a Virgo as well. So I overanalyze everything, but you have to honor the process.

Anita Adams: 00:29:04

I like to tell my clients to remember that everything happens in divine right time. And I know it's so hard, myself included, you know, like I want things to happen quickly, you know, like this should all fall into place now. And I should be able to, you know, do all these amazing things that I have planned for my my future and it takes time and you just have to you have to have the faith to trust that it's going to happen, what you're going especially when you're when you aren't listening to that soul voice and you're listening to it and following those, those nudges and

Tammy Weis: 00:29:42

it's not easy but when you when you come into a new place and and I essentially it That in itself is a miracle you know, I came here knowing nobody and now I've created this project and this album is incorporating you know a lot of people, I'm so grateful for that. But it, there was a lot of suffering, you know, but there, there was also a lot of healing. And there was also a lot of me becoming a better person because of it. And I'm very, very grateful for it. But it was also healing from myself and my entire life, not just this project. So it allowed me to become face to face with things that perhaps were holding me back in my life, and you grow and change part of your journey. Really great.

Anita Adams: 00:30:32

Yeah. I'm curious. When you first decided to come to Portugal. That was long before you had this project in mind. Right? You didn't You didn't come here to, to do to work on Fernando pessoas material. No, I

Tammy Weis: 00:30:52

literally just wanted a break. I was living in London at the time and and I wanted a holiday and there happened to be it was really incredible. I've never been to Portugal. And to be honest, I've never really thought about going to Portugal. But there was this incredible deal for a two week break. To go to the Algarve and I thought, okay, let's do it. And literally, so I used it as like a songwriting thing and writing some new music. And literally in that two weeks, I met, I created a whole new life for myself. I met incredible people.

Anita Adams: 00:31:27

But you were planning on going back after two weeks?

Tammy Weis: 00:31:31

Well, I did go back after two days. But what had happened was that I kept coming back and forth to Portugal. Because I just wanted to spend time with these people. It was great. This was it was my new favorite place. And then I eventually because this was the Algarve, I eventually was introduced to Lisbon, and then the pharma area. And then things started this year, but it was it was literally the Algar that I absolutely just, I felt better than I've ever felt in my life, just the peace and calm and it just, there's the light, the energy, the wind, the sea, very, very magical rice. Yeah. And I was open to receive that magic, and it inspired

Anita Adams: 00:32:19

me. I think that's key, again, open to receive, I think that's super important to be in that place of receivership and, and willingness to accept what what will come your way. When we moved to Portugal, I felt a really strong call to come here. And I don't know why I still I still don't know why, you know, like, what has what has driven me here, and I'm open to receive, and I anticipate something something is going to happen. Maybe it's just a lesson that I need to learn or whatever it is, but that willingness to pack up and move to a country where you don't know a soul, you don't speak the language. You know, it's, it's definitely a scary, but exciting journey. And sometimes I have to remind myself just to be open to receive what will what will come next and you seem to model that beautifully, you know, like, you're, you're living.

Tammy Weis: 00:33:21

I have my days, don't get me wrong. But I'm, you know, I'm really proud of myself, and I'm so grateful for the opportunities that I have. And so, you do have to constantly pick yourself up and keep going and persevere. And that's, you know, I feel like I I feel like, you know, that's always been who I am is tenacity, perseverance, you without those two things, you're, you're definitely not going to get the things that you want need in your life. So it's not just about a vibe or it's not just about manifesting something, it's, you know, you have to have the persistence and the tenacity to end Yes, you know, you're coming into a country and I am doing a project on our poet that this country loves and adores and and his legacy is in my hands and and who am I and it's it's a it's not an easy you know, it's a big responsibility. So

Anita Adams: 00:34:26

have those words come up to you in this process like who am I to do this is that sort of that your your inner critic trying to hold you down?

Tammy Weis: 00:34:37

You know what again, I feel so fortunate with Luis Miguel was nephew because he was so over the moon and so excited that I was going to be doing so grateful, you know, to be able to really at this point, you know, to look at bringing I mean for not up so is growing tremendously internationally but to to You put his words to music and bring it to North American to bring it to, you know, England and to look at more of the English speaking countries to, you know, understand his work a bit more and just to and coming from a good place of love and just beautiful, what it's doing to me how it's inspired me and hopefully it will inspire other people.

Anita Adams: 00:35:26

Beautiful. So the title again of your album is soul whisper. Why that title? What's What does that mean to you?

Tammy Weis: 00:35:36

Well, I mean, for me, it, it was all about? Well, as you know, with whisper, it's just these little nudges, these little signs, these little vibes, it is like a whisper that you that you follow through weighing. And so much of it is, is the soul for netup. So writes a lot about the soul. I think that's where my biggest connection with him is, is that my soul connection, you know, with him and what it did for me. And so soul whisperer, I mean, originally, my elbow was going to be called whispers of the soul credible I mean, that is, when you, this just sort of affirms what we are talking about when I first met and literally said that title and my mouth dropped. I mean, I changed it, slightly shortened it a bit, but I guess I did that so that you could have that as your book. And I had, oh, maybe Thank you. But, you know, it is it's about those connections. And there's something so magical about this country, there's, you know, you walk in Al Fama, and you see the hundreds of fato houses and there's an energy, there's a spirit, there's a soul, there's a longing that I've never felt anywhere, you know, I've traveled a lot, you know, I've never anything even remotely like it in the wind, there's something there in the sea in the light. There's such a soul connection here. And for me, that's what it's, you know, that's what it's been about. So

Anita Adams: 00:37:22

that's really cool. I love that. Wonderful. So how people are wanting to listen to your, your album, and I think anybody that's listening to this show should maybe they're listening to this show, because that's, that's a whisper that they need to go listen to this album. And I you know, my goal is I hope that you know, people get even a small portion of inspiration that, you know, I've received during this, this time and and to learn more research more about Fernando. So it's extraordinary. What an extraordinary, extraordinary man, and he lived an incredible life. And I you know, I think that there's a lot that we can learn a lot of his poems now. It's interesting when when, even with some of the songs, it's it's so I mean, he passed over 80 years ago. So he died in 1935. He was born in 1888. But so much of what he writes about is relevant to now. And that's what I find interesting. I mean, he was Fernando Pessoa also, too, was you know, he was quite psychic and clairvoyant and, you know, did a lot of numerologist. So he was very much into sort of what we're talking about in terms of, you know, energies and vibes and following things. And I think he was so ahead of his time because his words are so relevant now. And I think, you know, I think hopefully that you know, people can really tune into to those and help themselves, you know,
